Your Best SEO Page Might Be One Google Hasn’t Even Indexed

Greg Heilers AI Search August 2026

Happy Tuesday!

Quick gut check before we start. If a page pulls in zero clicks in Google Search Console, is it a dead page?

For years, the answer was obviously yes. This week, I want to show you why the answer is now – sometimes – “no.”

· THE SHIFT ·

Half the Web Is Bots Now

Cloudflare’s live Radar had bot traffic at 60.5% of requests to HTML pages the week we pulled it. Humans were down to 39.5%. The reported crossover point earlier this summer: 57.5%.

  • So, the exact number moves, but the machines have passed us either way.

Cloudflare Radar, week of Aug 11–17, 2026: bots 60.5% vs. humans 39.5% of requests to HTML pages.

Most of that surge is AI. Crawlers and agents from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, and Google, reading pages so they can answer questions for their users.

Here’s the problem that creates. Your analytics were built to count humans.

Google Search Console tracks clicks. A person has to see your link, click it, and land. That’s the traffic it reports.

An AI crawler doesn’t click. It reads you, cites you, and moves on. None of that shows up as a click or an impression in the tool you check every morning.

So a page can be doing real work for AI and look stone dead in your reports.

· EXHIBIT A ·

A Page Google Hasn’t Indexed. AI Cites It Across Four Engines.

One of our clients, a specialty equipment retailer, publishes a blog post answering their single most valuable buyer question.

Pull that URL up in Google Search Console and it says, word for word: “URL is not on Google. Page is not indexed.”

Google Search Console URL Inspection showing 'URL is not on Google' and 'Page is not indexed: Discovered - currently not indexed.' Domain redacted.
Google Search Console URL Inspection for the client’s most valuable blog post. Domain redacted.

Now ask ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity, or Google’s own AI Overview that same buyer question. The client gets recommended, and that not-indexed page gets cited as a source.

Read that again:

  • Google has not indexed the page.
  • Google’s AI Overview cites the page.
  • Same company, same page, same week.

That is the whole shift, in one screenshot.

Not every valuable page earns its keep in Google clicks. Some earn it by becoming the evidence AI uses to recommend you.

· THE PROOF ·

We Turned A Campaign Off
To Prove It Was Us

Any client can fairly ask: how do you know that’s your doing and not everything else we have going on?

So on one campaign, we proved it the annoying way. We turned it off.

Over about six weeks, a client went from invisible for their money question to discovered by the engines, then recommended by four of them within a few days of each other.

On day 40 we deliberately stopped maintaining the assets. The rankings fell off one by one, first Perplexity, then ChatGPT, then Google’s AI Overview.

Then we turned it back on. Every ranking came back, plus a seventh engine we hadn’t had before.

Seven AI engines now recommend that client for their most valuable question. And we know it’s us, because we watched it disappear when we stopped and return when we resumed.

The lesson: AI visibility is not a thing you ship once. It is a position you defend. The moment you stop, a competitor’s content can outrank yours, or the source can get deleted, and the recommendation quietly moves on.

· MEASUREMENT ·

So How Do You Actually Measure This?

Two signals, one on each side of the visit.

  • Back end: are AI crawlers reading your important pages more often? That lives in your server or CDN logs, not in Search Console. Tools like Cloudflare will show you which bot is crawling and even why.
  • Front end: is your branded search going up? People discover you inside an LLM, then open a new tab and Google your name. That branded search shows up in Search Console even when the AI citation doesn’t.

Here’s what that can look like:

Google Search Console impressions rising from about 272 per day on May 1 to about 2,345 per day on August 18, a gain of 762%, roughly 7x, during an Elite Reddit Branded Posts campaign. Client anonymized.
One Jolly client’s Google Search Console impressions over about three months of an Elite Reddit Branded Posts campaign.

That’s roughly 272 impressions a day in early May to around 2,300 a day by mid-August. Call it 7x, or 762% if you want to be precise about it.

Now, I’m not going to pretend we caused every one of those impressions. But here’s the honest mechanism, and it’s the fun part:

A good chunk of that surge is the brand now showing up inside Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google counts those appearances as impressions in Search Console.

So, the same off-page work that gets you cited by ChatGPT also turns up right here, on the one Google report almost everyone already checks. That’s the front-end signal doing its job. This one ran on our Elite Reddit Branded Posts.

Now, the honest part on the rest, because I promised myself this issue wouldn’t oversell: you cannot perfectly trace one AI answer to one sale. Mobile apps and some AI surfaces strip the referrer, so a lot of that traffic just lands as “direct.” Branded search and AI Overview impressions are the cleanest proxies we have, not perfect ones.

There is one thing anyone can add today, though:

  • Put “AI search platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude…)” as an option on your “How did you find us?” form.

Every time someone picks it, you’ve tied a real conversion straight to AI discovery. It’s low tech and it works.

· THE UNFAIR ADVANTAGE ·

Why This Is a Small Brand’s
Unfair Advantage

One of our clients, an HR software marketplace, has a genuinely strong in-house content team. They politely told us they didn’t need our blogs. Fair.

But the test isn’t whether your team is good. It’s whether your pages are the ones AI actually cites for your money questions.

If a household-name competitor is winning that answer and you are not, “we have a great content team” isn’t the rebuttal. The scoreboard is who gets cited.

Here’s the good news, and it’s the whole reason I’m excited about this:

  • Off-page is how a smaller brand leapfrogs a giant in AI answers.

A genuinely helpful Reddit thread, a LinkedIn post, a YouTube video, an earned mention. You don’t need the biggest website.

You need the most corroborated story across the places AI trusts.

And unlike an ad, an AI recommendation carries no “Sponsored” label. It reads as the machine’s honest pick, which is exactly why it’s such valuable real estate.

That’s the entire idea behind Own A Prompt: we plant and then defend the corroborating assets across the places AI trusts, so your brand becomes the answer instead of a footnote.

· THE TAKEAWAY ·

The Old Scoreboard Stopped Covering Half the Game

The old scoreboard still counts. It just quietly stopped covering half the game.

Start watching two new things:

  1. Are AI crawlers reading your key pages?
  2. Is your branded search climbing?

And, before you delete a “dead” page, go check whether ChatGPT is quietly using it to recommend you.

One of your worst-performing pages in Search Console might be your best salesperson in AI Search right now.

Until next week,

Greg
