One Reddit Thread + One Blog Post = 7 AI Engines in 19 Days

Greg Heilers Case Study August 2026

Happy Tuesday!

Quick story this week. One client, one question, 19 days.

A specialty construction-equipment retailer came to us invisible in AI search. When their contractor buyers asked ChatGPT which retailers ship nationwide, the client appeared nowhere.

19 days later, all seven major AI surfaces were recommending them by name. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Claude, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.

We just published the full week-by-week breakdown as a case study, screenshots and all.

Here's the short version:

· THE IDEA ·

Every Category Has a Money Prompt

In every niche, there's a handful of questions buyers type into ChatGPT right before they spend money.

We call these Target Prompts. Whoever the engines recommend in those answers owns the demand behind them.

For this client, it was: "Which [specialty] equipment retailers in the US ship nationwide?"

  • Paraphrased, since we are keeping our client anonymous.

When we started, the client appeared in exactly zero of those answers.

· THE APPROACH ·

The Own A Prompt System

Four-step Own A Prompt system running clockwise: pick the target prompt, produce the assets AI trusts, track every citation, defend and expand.
The four-step loop from the full case study.

This is the engine behind our "Own A Prompt" service. One prompt, multiple assets, one owner.

· WEEK BY WEEK ·

What Actually Happened

Week 1: We placed the Target Prompt as a genuine sourcing question in the trade subreddit where the client's buyers actually hang out, and seeded a helpful, detailed answer thread.

Three days later, that thread held the #1 organic position on Google for the prompt itself. Perplexity was citing it on day one.

  • This is the same deletion-proof Reddit playbook Muskaan shared in #83, if you missed it.

Week 2: The engines converged. ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, and Gemini each began answering the prompt with the client as a lead recommendation.

No brand name in the thread title, no ads, no affiliate links. Just the source the engines found most useful.

Week 3: We published a blog post answering the same prompt on the client's own domain. Within 72 hours, ChatGPT was citing it and sending tagged referral traffic you can see in analytics.

· TAKEAWAY ·

The TL;DR

One asset gets you mentioned. Two or more assets that agree get you recommended.

AI engines corroborate across sources before they commit to a recommendation. So we give them more than one source to agree on:

  • When the Reddit thread and the onsite post both answered the prompt, Gemini and Google AI Overview cited them together inside a single answer.

AI answers also move faster than classic SEO ever did.

That means the first brand to target a prompt usually gets to own it.

By contrast, if a competitor gets to your money prompt first, you're the one who needs to do the dislodging.

Until next week,

Greg
