10 Blue Links are Dead

Greg Heilers AI Search May 2026

Happy Tuesday! This week, we'll dive into what changed, what it means, and where the new game is being won.

Watch: 10 Blue Links are Dead

Google just announced the biggest update to Search in 25 years. They're calling it the Intelligent Search Box, and AI Mode is now the default search experience.

If you blinked, here's the TechCrunch breakdown.

  • The selfish read, as an agency owner: Google just spent its I/O keynote doing two years of awareness marketing for our AI visibility services. So, thank you Sundar.

The less-selfish read: if your strategy was "rank, get the click, convert on-page," that strategy just lost half its pillars.

What actually changed

Kind of… a lot:

  • The search box now expands to take long, conversational queries. No keyword guessing.
  • Agents work 24/7 in the background, watching the web for what you asked about, pinging you when something matches.
  • Remembers context across queries. Ask a follow-up, it knows what you mean.
  • Accepts text, images, videos, files, and Chrome tabs as inputs.
  • Calls businesses, compares options, and books services for you.

That last one rewires local search. AI now picks which businesses get called, which means "rank in the map pack" becomes "be the option the AI trusts enough to dial."

And the kicker: AI Overviews now serve 2.5 billion monthly users, and AI Mode just passed 1 billion. ChatGPT, for reference, has 900 million weekly active users. AI search is not a fringe behavior anymore.

What it means for clicks

Zero-click searches were already running around 60% of all queries. With AI Mode flipped to the default, that number is going up, not down.

If your playbook was "rank, get the click, convert on-page," that playbook is now half a playbook.

The other half is being the source the AI cites, recommends, and remembers. Which is a completely different game.

It is not technical SEO with more keywords stuffed in. It is brand plus content plus earned mentions, layered across every surface an AI reads.

That work is what we've quietly been doing for two years. The thing that changed this week is that the rest of the market finally has to admit it.

YouTube got its own AI mode too

It's called Ask YouTube. Same idea as Google's AI Mode, but for video.

Ask it a question, it surfaces the most relevant video, and it jumps you to the exact moment that answers what you asked.

This is enormous if you've been sleeping on video as an AI visibility surface. YouTube is not a separate channel anymore, it's part of the same answer engine.

We've been quietly building a YouTube AI visibility service for exactly this moment. Hit reply if you want a walkthrough.

Local SEO got rewired in the same breath

Google is now pulling social media posts directly into Google Maps. Your GBP is not just hours-and-photos anymore, it's a live feed.

GBP signals already make up roughly 32% of local ranking weight. Activity and engagement signals keep climbing.

With AI surfaces now reading your social posts to decide who to recommend, "active on social" stops being optional for local businesses. It is now part of the ranking math.

If you've been running local SEO and ignoring social, this is the week to stop ignoring it. Link the GBP, post consistently, treat every post like it's feeding the Maps panel. Because it is.

Why I'm (genuinely) excited about this

For two years, the hardest part of selling AI visibility was explaining why it matters. People would nod, then go right back to their traffic-and-rankings dashboards.

Google just did that explaining for us. AI Mode is the default. Blue links are an afterthought. You can't argue with the search bar.

Which means the job changes. Less "convince you this is real," more "show you what good looks like."

Very few agencies are actually positioned for this. Most "AI visibility" agencies are still doing technical SEO and article writing with an LLM logo bolted on.

The work that actually moves the needle on AI visibility right now is Reddit Brand Mentions, Quora, YouTube, and earned linkbuilding that an AI will actually cite. It's content production for the surfaces AIs read, not articles aimed at page two of Google.

  • Should we bring the "Jolly Content" name back for the next chapter of this?

The early-mover window

The I/O 2026 rollout started last week, US first, and keeps expanding through summer. Most US businesses haven't started adapting. The full impact hasn't landed yet.

If your competitors are still optimizing for ten blue links, you have a window. It is not a wide one.

If you want to talk through what AI visibility looks like for your specific business, grab a slot here and we'll map it out together.

Until next week,

Greg

P.S. For the geeky version, Google's own I/O 2026 Search post walks through Gemini 3.5 Flash as the new default model in AI Mode, plus the generative-UI stuff coming this summer. The mini-app builder inside Search is the wildest part of the whole announcement.

P.P.S. If you're rebuilding your strategy for AI Mode and want reference points, keep an eye on the new guides for Reddit, Quora, YouTube we're putting out.
