Happy Tuesday!
This week, I sat down with Doug Downs, founder of Stories and Strategies. Doug started in radio, moved to TV, spent 24 years in PR, and then put it all together into podcasting. Doug has now produced 22 branded podcasts across North America, the UK, and Australia. Safe to say, he knows a thing or two!
Podcasting is Middle-of-Funnel Marketing
The number of times someone has signed on with Jolly SEO directly because of our podcast? Less than 10.
But that's not the point. Doug put it perfectly: podcasting sits in the middle of the funnel. It's not about brand awareness, and it's not about closing a sale. It's about building the desire and the trust that makes everything else easier.
The .3/3/30 Rule
Doug gave me one of the most practical podcast frameworks I've heard:
You have 0.3 seconds to earn 3 seconds. 3 seconds to earn 30 seconds. 30 seconds to earn 3 minutes.
0.3 seconds: That's your artwork and title in a search result. 3 seconds: Your episode title and description. 30 seconds: Go straight to the meat. No weather chat, no inside jokes.
The 10-Minute Pattern Break
According to research by Dr. John Medina at the University of Washington, the human brain needs a pattern break every 10 minutes. Doesn't matter how good your content is. At 10 minutes, you need something to jolt people back in. A shift in energy, a new segment, a question, a pause.
Should Your Podcast Title Be a Question?
Doug turned the tables on me here, and I loved it. His question: as AI Search takes over, should podcast episode titles be phrased as questions, rather than statements?
His team is already experimenting: Question-based chapter markers in show notes. Headlines written for how ChatGPT and Perplexity are searching, not just how humans search.
The Jolly SEO Connection
Podcasting is brand marketing. It's the same reason we build branded backlinks for our clients, not just keyword links. It's the same reason we're building Reddit Brand Mentions, not just dropping links in comments.
Brand is the long game. And the long game is the only one worth playing in 2026.
Until next week, Greg
